Do you know what the medical term is for loss of skin color and pigmentation?
It’s called vitiligo (vit-uh-lie-go). Vitiligo causes the skin to lose its natural color. Patches of lighter skin appear in place of original pigment. Some people have small patches of lost pigment while others lose much more skin color. Vitiligo can also affect many parts of the body including hair, inside the mouth and even eye color.
Contrary to Vitiligo is hyperpigmentation, the accumulation of pigment, melanin, creating dark spots. These most commonly occur in sun exposed areas – face, arms, and hands. There are many causes of increased pigment, the main cause being sun exposure. It is important to understand the cause of your discoloration to best treat hyperpigmentation.
